How we tested solar lighting

Solar products are judged on useful light after real charging conditions, not just headline lumen claims. We look at panel placement tolerance, dusk-sensor behaviour, runtime after dull days, battery chemistry, weather sealing, and whether the light still performs when the season turns against it.

Design & Build

The X3 uses a die-cast housing rated IP67, a step above the IP65 typical at this price. The panel tilts through 90 degrees on a ratcheted hinge, letting you chase the low winter sun. At 1.2m on its stake it sits higher than most, throwing light further across a path.

Performance

We measured 48 lumens on high with an even, warm 3000K spread covering roughly 2m of path. The headline figure is winter retention: in our December testing the X3 held 65% of its summer runtime — the best in the group — thanks to its monocrystalline panel and LiFePO4 cell. Budget rivals averaged 25%.

Verdict

At £45 the X3 isn't cheap, but it's the only path light in our test that stayed genuinely useful through a UK winter. Spread across a five-year battery life, it's also the cheapest per year of reliable service. It's our top pick for year-round garden lighting.
